Bread is very popular around the world and there are many ways of cooking bread  as it is in Botswana. There are many types of cooked bread in  Botswana which have been in our country over the years. Their traditional setswana names are as follows  magwinya, diphaphata ( di-pha-pha- ta) , mapakiwa or lobaka and madombi.



       ingredients of making the dough

     4 cups of white or brown bread
     10g of 1 pack of yeast
     salt .... 1/4  tea spoon
     sugar... ( desired size )


Diphaphata ( di- pha-pha -ta )
 Diphaphata is a great tasting bread that can be eaten as hamburger  bread to dinner roles. Additional, extra ingredients can be added to make the bread taste even great.

Mangwinya  ( fat cakes) , This is bread deep fried in cooking oil. It can be enjoyed with mince in the middle or any other meat that one wants to use e.g ( seswaa-- pounded beef ).  The taste of such fat cakes is extraordinary.

Mapakiwa or lobaka  is pot bread which is cooked by  rubbing cooking oil in a pot, placing small buns of dough in the pot, then putting the lead upside down and putting fire on top and under the pot, basically its like our traditional oven. Different tribes have ways of cooking it but not far from the procedure.

Madombi is dough cooked in small potion of water almost like steamed dough. This bread is very popular and is enjoyed at dinner with beef stew and vegetables.
